Human
Mosaic

BACKGROUND

Masca Theatre is a partner in the European project Human Mosaic – Made of you and me, for everyone to see, together with Teatr Brama (Poland) – Stella Polaris (Norway) – Nordisk Theatre Laboratorium (Denmark) – Fabrica (Athens) – REPLIKA Educational Center (Romania).

Human Mosaic is an audience engagement project that aims to use socially-engaged theater to create a large-scale performance in 4 different (urban and suburban) communities. The project is based on Teatr Brama’s experience in creating large-scale outdoor performances, specifically the performance Pink Floyd-The Wall, which took place in 2018 in a park in the city of Goleniow (Poland). This performance included 250 community actors, 100 community musicians and 100 professionals (from theater and music, technicians) and was held in front of an audience of about 3000 people.

The project will target local community groups with the invitation to become an active factor in participatory culture. This will take the form of a series of socially engaged theater workshops. The outcome of these workshops will be a performance that includes a wide range of groups, a real human mosaic. The project will seek to involve as wide a cross-section of the public as possible. Human Mosaic invites diverse community groups to cooperate and take up the challenge to work together as actors, singers, musicians, technicians, scenographers, etc. The coordinating artist of the project will provide local groups with his curatorial experience, which will help in the planning of the 4 performances (Athens, Bucharest, Goleniow and Holstebro).

The partners are experienced in the dimension of community theater (with social involvement), with an emphasis on activating local communities by including them in cultural and, indirectly, social life. The activities planned in the project are participatory and the beneficiaries will have a direct impact on the development of the workshops and the final theatrical production. The workshops and meetings that will take place within the project involve the active participation of the local community, which will then take part in the final production. These activities will positively influence the integration of the local community as well as increase the sense of belonging. All these elements will result in a desire to participate in the cultural and social life of Athens, Bucharest, Goleniów and Holstebro and will reduce the boundary between artist and audience. The active involvement of local communities in the project will significantly influence their participation and activity in the future.

WHAT DO WE PROPOSE TO DO?

In collaboration with organizations and institutions in the vicinity of the Masca Theatre, we have formed workshops with members of the local community: children, teenagers and seniors willing to participate in a program of artistic exploration and documentation. This project aims to build a unique performance with a focus on community empowerment, inviting viewers into the world of everyday life of all age groups near them through songs, mini-theatrical scenes and performative installations.

WHEN DO WE APPLAUD?

The Romanian performance of the project will take place in the auditorium of Masca on June 30, at 20:00.
